It is due to myself to make some statement of my services, that they may be fully known and appreciated; as, unfortunately for me, both His Excellency the Governor and the Head of my Department are almost strangers in the Colony, and know but little of my claims to consideration.

I entered the Service in Hongkong on the 1st October, 1845, as Accountant in the Purveyor General's Department, and I performed duties in that capacity to the satisfaction of the Surveyor General until the suspension of Mr. Tarrant, the Clerk of Deed Registry, in August, 1847, when I was appointed Acting Clerk of Deed Registry in addition to my own duties.
At this time, a reduction in the Surveyor General's Establishment was effected, and I owe it to my own zeal and the value of my services, that I was retained in the Department in preference to one who had the claim of more than double length of service.
